Bees create buzz about sustainability at WKU

The Western Kentucky University Office of Sustainability's journey at its current location began with honeybees and has come full circle with the recent addition of a new beehive to the backyard community garden.
Four years ago, Christian Ryan, Office of Sustainability coordinator, was contacted by local beekeepers who had found a colony of bees in an interior wall of a vacant house owned by WKU. They asked permission to move the bees to the Office of Sustainability's garden, then located at the university farm. Ryan agreed and then wanted to take a look at the house, because the office was looking for more space and a sustainable home for demonstration purposes.
That vacant house became the new home of the Office of Sustainability in October 2013. In March, bees were brought back to the location, but this time they made their home outside in a corner of the garden.
