Press Release: Heartland Chia
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On March 23 the United States celebrates National Chia Day.
The nutrition benefits of chia have made it one of the trendiest health foods of 2018. However, the majority of chia seeds are imported from other countries, and many people aren’t aware that you can get this superfood from family farms here in the U.S.
Originating in Franklin, Kentucky, Heartland Chia began in 2012 and holds the exclusive license to grow and market the only chia seeds that will grow successfully in the U.S. Since its inception, Heartland Chia’s goal has been to expand chia production to family farms in multiple states and make chia more available to consumers and food manufacturers here in the U.S. Founders Chris and Jill Kummer, have made it their goal to spread the word about their product and its traceability.
“We wanted to grow this nourishing, sustainable food that is consumed by so many Americans on family farms here in the U.S.,” Chris said. “People want to know where their food is coming from, and we can trace the chia you buy back to the field it was grown in.”
Although delivered in a small package, chia seeds are a powerhouse of versatile nutrition. Annessa Chumbley, nutritionist RD shares the different ways they can be used in everyday foods including adding them to salads, smoothie bowls, smoothies, oatmeal, drinks and much more. When added to a liquid, chia will expand and can be used in many different ways — even as an egg substitute.
“My favorite way is to make ‘bubble wellness water’ using fresh fruit, mint and chia for a delicious and healthful drink,” Chumbley said.
Chia seeds are a great source of essential healthy fats, fiber, protein, potassium, magnesium, iron, calcium, vitamins A, B, C, E; and a rich source of antioxidants. Chumbley says that per two tablespoons, chia seeds contain 8 grams of healthy fats, 10 grams fiber, 5 grams protein, and have 130 calories.
“In my opinion, we should all be using this superfood,” Chumbley stated. “And it’s even more ‘super’ when you know it's story, where it comes from, and how it's grown. That's why I love Heartland Chia.”
Not only is chia healthy for humans, it is also a restorative crop that can help heal the land and environment. Compared to conventional crops, chia uses about 50 percent less water and approximately 75 percent less fertilizer. It is also a pollinator crop providing an environment in which bees and butterflies thrive.
“We believe there is a wonderful opportunity with a sustainable crop that helps farmers improve the land they farm,” said Chris, who spends every day on his farm.
Seeds from Heartland Chia are locally sourced in the United States, naturally gluten free and non-GMO. So, when you head to the grocery store this National Chia Day, really think about the word “national” and grab a bag of Heartland Chia to support the only 100 percent U.S. grown chia seed in the country.
